Teaching has always been a passion and tutoring English and Social Studies in particular has proven to be a profoundly enriching experience. Tutoring gives students the opportunity to work on areas they find important to their own development, thus making my teaching relevant to them. On the other hand, tutoring also gives me the opportunity to develop materials that are original and insightful and created especially to fit each student’s personal interest. Students benefit from tutoring in numerous and different ways. For most students tutoring ensures that they improve their grades and overall academic results in the short-run. Other students, who have been wrongly convinced that ‘they cannot get Algebra or Calculus ,’ learn that in fact they can ‘get’ these subjects and also how these subjects are relevant to them personally. Indeed, successful teaching in general and my tutoring in particular, aims to help students’ grades in the short-run but most importantly it aims to cultivate their desire to learn for themselves in the long-run. The confidence to learn – to know that one can tackle and eventually master any subject – is not something that human beings are born with. It is, however, a type of confidence that I have been instilling in my students.
