Experience

Teaching is not about 'I': teaching is about the student. A good teacher will assess the student before trying to teach anything. A good teacher will have many resources at hand to meet the specific learning needs of the pupil. A good teacher will confer with others to help direct the student in the best possible way to meet his or her goal. I have no wall full of diplomas. I DO have two libraries, a lifetime of travel, study, teaching, mentoring and the experience of one who has lived a full life. Most people who meet me and begin to know me simply assume that I have a masters degree - or three - hanging up somewhere, or tucked away in a drawer. I have taught grammar school students how to 'Write like Robin Hood', and spent a number of years teaching calligraphy and design, including coursework at Atlanta College of Art. I have tutored children in handwriting, and taught adults about Medieval Jewish Philosophy. There is nothing that exists, or that ever happened, that emerged singularly from a vacuum. All of life, art, history, science - all, is intricately bound with every other process, and all of it is going on twenty-four hours a day, every day of the year. It is this greater view of the world that I bring to my students. They prepare the coursework that is needed, but also learn to have an awareness of the world that exists beyond the sixth grade history test. My knowledge defies categories. My experience is long and widely varied. It is not my job to help someone cram for A test: rather, it is my task to open eyes to the wonders of the world, and the joy of learning.

Hobbies

As soon as I started learning to read, I read everything I could get my hands on! In second grade I began to play with words myself, writing my first poems. The first collection of my work, Notes from Under the Covers, is available on Amazon. Notes from the Dance of Life will be published in early 2015. Editing an international weekly e-publication in Jewish studies is a major part of my life. I take breaks by constructing jigsaw puzzles. In my life I have acted, studied voice, horseback riding, and fencing, and navigated a helicopter flight! The Big Bang Theory and As Time Goes By are two favorite TV shows. I love travel to Europe, good food, foreign languages, great music (of almost any variety!) public speaking, costume design, and really good espresso!
