Education

β€œTo give real service you must add something which cannot be bought or measured with money, and that is sincerity and integrity.” Douglas Adams When pressed to categorize myself as either instructor or facilitator, I lean toward the latter. I facilitate learning - learning of the new or giving new insights into previously acquired knowledge. It is my role to encourage and to stimulate as well as to provide new information. I want to encourage critical thinking and behavioral change. To be most effective, information must be integrated into routine thought and behavior patterns. I believe that the most important element in learning is active participation by the learner - egocentric involvement in the process. Students will learn more if they feel that they are an important and active part of the process. Each student brings unique talents and experiences to the learning environment. It is my quest to help them enhance their unique qualities. My teaching experience has been predominantly in the inner city of Miami, Florida and in rural and urban areas of Georgia. I have taught physical science, biology-regular and honors, earth science and chemistry. At the college level, I have taught Allied Health and Nursing students in disciplines such as microbiology, anatomy and physiology (lab and lecture), as well as biotechnology. I have also designed, wrote and implemented a biotechnology associates of science (AS) program for Darton College, in Albany, GA. I am an inclusion-minded science facilitator who has welcomed all students into a warm learning environment. I have extensive experience with at risk, EBD, autistic and other special needs students. Additionally, I have served in the capacities of Curriculum Instructional Coordinator for all subjects in high school (Florida); as Academic Coach for all subjects in middle school (Georgia) settings; and as Secondary Science Specialists in Utah, where I was a science coach in 21 schools. One of my areas of expertise is the analyses of data to find trends that can pinpoint student strengths and weaknesses. Once the data is analyzed, I use the information to drive student centered learning. Prior to your initial training session, I will administer a learning style survey and review your current performance in the subject area of interest. With extensive training in cross curricular pedagogical approaches, as well as data driven decision making, I will differentiate your tutoring experience based on individual learning styles. I will use literacy strategies based on the Common Core; and associated Common Core math strategies to enhance the Next Generation of Science Standards to ensure mastery of your subject area. With experience in three states, where I informed curriculum and sat on standardized test committees, I am confident that I can assist you with enhancing mastery in your subject area of interest. Above all, my PhD research on using emotions to predict science outcomes, ensures that I have the expertise to reduce science anxiety during your tutoring experiences with me. I believe, as Hinton ET AL (2008) stated that "emotions are fundamental to learning".
